A note from Matthew Quinones, CEO, the Stamford Public Education Foundation

I hope this finds you safe and healthy. These unprecedented times make it especially important to stay connected with family and friends. Therefore, today we are launching our e-newsletter, The Bridge.  Our hope is that as SPEF staff works remotely, assisting our City of Stamford and school district in new and creative ways, The Bridge will keep you informed on changes in our programming, opportunities to volunteer and other ways you can continue to support our work. We miss seeing our students, mentors, volunteers, community, and corporate partners at our weekly programs and special events.

I look forward to reuniting with all of you when it is safe to do so.  Until then, we will use The Bridge to stay in touch.

Be well and stay safe,
Matt

SPEF's COVID-19 Helping Hands Initiatives

SPEF is proud to launch Helping Hands, a series of initiatives we are delivering in response to COVID-19's impact on students and families in our community.

Two Helping Hands initiatives are currently underway, Grab and Go Meals and Home Work Helpers. Thank you to the many who have volunteered to assist with Grab and Go Meals, distributing breakfast, lunch, and dinner to Stamford Public Schools students. Since March 13th, nearly 200 community volunteers submitted inquiries to SPEF, with approximately a quarter of those completing the application process. As of April 22, 104,538 meals have been distributed. SPEF volunteers have filled an average of 57 volunteer shifts per week since April 6, totaling approximately 575 hours of service!

Starting this week, SPEF and The Ferguson Library are partnering to launch Home Work Helpers, providing free, online, interactive academic help for students in grade levels K-12, Monday—Friday.

Happenings

PLTI Perseveres

Despite the need for social distancing, the spring 2020 cohort of our Parent Leadership Training Institute continues to meet each Thursday. Under the guidance of PLTI Coordinator, Regan Allan, the group of 23 parent leaders (plus 12 young leaders) meet weekly for classes via Zoom. Recently our parent leaders participated in their much-loved "Power of Media" class featuring John Breunig from the Stamford Advocate. Three class members had their editorials printed. Read what they shared.

Excellence In Education Awards

Thank you to our Excellence in Education 2020 sponsors and the many individuals who purchased tickets and "shout outs." Our event is currently on hold, but stay tuned for new plans to bring the community together to celebrate
public education and to recognize our teachers and corporate partners.

SPEF Spotlight

Together with our long-standing partner, The Ferguson Library, we have launched Home Work Helpers. It provides free, online, interactive academic help for students in grade levels K-12, Monday—Friday. It has been made possible in part by a grant from The Fairfield County COVID-19 Resiliency Fund.  We appreciate FCCF's ongoing support of SPEF and our programs during this public health crisis. To register your student in our program or to volunteer to be a helper visit our web site.
