November 2023

Join Us in "Giving Thanks" at SPEF's Books Across Stamford!
Saturday, November 18th at the Ferguson Library Main Branch: 1:00PM - 4:00 PM

Each year, SPEF sets a goal of getting at least 5,000 new books into the homes of Stamford Public Schools’ students through our Books Across Stamford program. We are proud to announce that we have already exceeded our goal! Since July we've distributed nearly 6,000 new books! Books Across Stamford is marching into the season of giving with our fall event, Giving Thanks.

Families and students, Pre-K through middle school, are invited to join us for a fun-filled fall book give-away! This free event will feature stories read by special guest readers, including Principal Joe Claps from Dolan Middle School (1:30 PM) and Principal Kathleen Kelley from Stillmeadow Elementary School (2:30 PM).

Children will also have the chance to select three new books from hundreds that will be available. Additionally, they can enjoy snacks, create some fun fall crafts, visit the photo booth, and even sign up for their own library card.

Books Across Stamford is an engaging literacy program focused on motivating children to read and helping families build home libraries.

Middle School Mentoring is Back in Action!
BECOME A MENTOR TODAY! SPEF is accepting mentor applications for the 2023-24 school year!

SPEF's Middle School Mentoring program is back in action at Stamford Public Schools! SPEF matches trained college, community, and corporate volunteers with students needing academic and social-emotional support for weekly one-on-one and group mentoring sessions. Currently, there are 27 mentors working with 29 students at Cloonan, Dolan, and Rippowam Middle School. Students collaborate with mentors to set long-term goal setting, identify extracurricular activities that excite them, and improve their academic standing. In later sessions, students will focus on developing organizational skills, and will enjoy fun activities such as board games.

SPEF has a waiting list of students who need mentors!  We are still accepting applications for the 2023-24 school year! If you are interested in making a difference in a child's life, please click here and fill SPEF's volunteer form. Please note that mentoring takes place during the school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

SPEF will receive $1.00 from every $2.50 reusable Community Bag sold during the month of November, at the 2200 Bedford Street Supermarket. All proceeds earned will go directly towards the educational programming that SPEF provides.

Sixteen Parents Sharpen Leadership Skills with PEP!
Twelve students also enjoy free leadership classes!

SPEF’s UConn People Empowering People Communities, also known as PEP, has kicked off. The Class of 2023 has 16 leaders from 8 different Central and South American countries. Offered fully in Spanish, PEP is a 10-week program designed by UConn for adults. The program started in Stamford in 2010 and emphasizes the connection between individuals and community action. The curriculum focuses on values, communication, life skills, problem-solving, parenting, and developing leadership skills.

There are also 12 students who are participating in Children’s People Empowering People (CPEP), a complement to PEP. It aims to enrich the power of children ages 5-12 to assume leadership roles in order to foster community action.
